Request for Ideas: How to get the men to come?
I'm fresh out of ideas as to how to get the men to come. A month ago, we had SEVEN new ladies and almost no men for them to dance with. Three of 'em came back a couple of times, and now they're gone, for lack of enough guys.
I've tried offering free admission to the guys so the ladies would have men to dance with, but this isn't fair to the ladies, and they mutinied as a result. (I don't blame 'em!) I've tried the Bring a Guy, Get in Free, and that had limited results. If any of you have suggestions or ideas as to how to get the men to show up, I'd love to hear from you.

T-Lou's Birthday Celebration THIS SATURDAY NIGHT APRIL 5th!
Mark your calendars! T-Lou's birthday bash THIS Saturday night, April 5, 2008 at the Knights of Columbus promises to be one of the best events of the year! Why? Because it's T-Lou's birthday! Rumor has it that he's turning 39, and I'd say that's correct. Not only do we all get to celebrate the birthday of one of LA's most popular local Zydeco performers, but we are also supporting the Knights of Columbus charities when we come out for this dance.
Come one, come all, it's going to be a fantastic time! See you all there! Here are the details:

I have Greg Benusa's new Zydeco dance instruction DVD's available at the Golden Sails on Thursday nights! Here's what Greg sent me to tell you:
New Zydeco & Cajun Dance Instruction DVD just released. It's title is Workshop #1 - Louisiana Dance Home School
Instructor Greg Benusa covers beginning Zydeco, Waltz, the Cajun Jig & Two Step. It breaks down the basics of each of these dances as well as covers a few intermediate moves as well.
It covers alternative teaching styles that are used across the country. The music on the DVD are from the bands of Brian Jack, Leroy Thomas, Noonie & The San Diego Cajun Playboy's.
It is currently available to purchase online at www.LearnZydeco.com <http://www.LearnZydeco.com> and will be sold through www.activevideos.com <http://www.activevideos.com> and probably Floyd's Records in the near future.
Thank You. - Greg ph: 619-857-8409
Rosie Ledet's "Pick It Up" on Sale at Floyd's Records!
I've been a subscriber to Floyd's Records newsletter for quite some time now. This week's featured CD is a great buy, and especially interesting as Rosie is one of the headliners at the Simi Cajun Creole Festival this year. Following is the write -up on Rosie from Floyd's newsletter:
"MARY ROSEZLA BELLARD LEDET was born Oct 25, 1971 in rural Church Point, LA. She learned to play the accordion by watching her husband, Morris, play and then practiced on his accordion while he worked during the day. She describes her first meeting with Zydeco as such; "I attended my first Zydeco dance at Richard's Club in Lawtell, LA- I didn't think I would like Zydeco music, but when I heard Boozoo Chavis play, I was hooked! That night I fell in love with Zydeco music."
Since rising to the front of her husband's Zydeco band, Rosie has been performing steadily throughout the Louisiana-Texas Zydeco circuit, as well as playing from one coast to the other. Last year she appeared at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, St Louis Blues Festival, Frog Island Festival and others across the country. Rosie plays more of the traditional style Cajun and Zydeco music, and she composes her own songs. It's been said that Zydeco is 'blues with an accent', and Rosie adds a touch of blues and Creole French to her songs. Rosie and her band have quickly become the act to watch on the zydeco circuit. She scored the #1 song on KVOL with "I'm Gonna Take Care Of Your Dog," and won three "Best Of The Best" awards from Offbeat Magazine, including Best Zydeco Band or Performer, Best New Zydeco Group or Performer, and Best Vocalist.
One of a small handful of women in Zydeco, Rosie has been enjoying year after year of success. Her warm stage presence combined with the infectious Zydeco beat, makes her irresistible to audiences. She also is one of the few younger Zydeco players who still writes and sings some of her own material in Creole French.
"The bayous of Louisiana have always been a boisterious and steamy place. From the rich orange sunsets to the violent hurricanes, the swamps that run through the Atchafalya Basin into the Gulf Of Mexico have been turned into the stuff of legends, thanks in part to the plethora of movies and television shows shot there. The bayous are never silent. From the chorus of frogs and insects that sing through the night, to the call of wild birds and other creatures during the sunlit hours, the sounds are varied and rich. But no sound of the Bayou is more distinctive and more indigenous than the sounds of Creole music; the sounds of thimbles scraping the corrugated steel of the frottoir while the bellows of an accordion pump out a Creole song."

Wildflower Update
This past Sunday I was fortunate enough to go out to the Lancaster area and the Poppy Preserve. It was cold so the poppies weren't open, but the displays of poppies and other wildflowers was still impressive. The Lupine weren't out as they've been in the past, but on Avenue D, which runs on the north side of the hill where the preserve is located, there were huge fields of tiny bright yellow flowers (sorry, I don't know the name) carpeting the ground for miles, as well as huge areas of poppies. For some great photos of the Antelope Valley Poppy Preserve, check out this link:
http://www.desertusa.com/wildflo/ca.html.
For the first time in my many years of going to Lancaster during poppy season, I saw a shepherd with her flock right next to road. As I was zipping along, I noticed a car parked on a street that intersected the road I was on, then noticed a woman with a tall stick standing next to the road ( I'm thinking, "hmmm, what's that stick that lady's carrying?"). Next, the gray-brown sage bushes seemed to be moving, and I realized they were sheep! Then I knew what that stick was. How cool! I pulled over, stopped the car, and got to watch the sheep as they grazed. Guess it doesn't take much to get a city-slicker like me all worked up, huh? Anyway, it was very cool!
I haven't looked at the weather forecast for this coming weekend, but even if it's cold, the flowers are still showing well. Check out the weather in the area before you go, so you can bundle up if needed, as the wind was gusting and temps were low. If it's warm this weekend, GO NOW, as the poppies won't last after a warm weekend.

April 19 and 20! Magnolia Sisters — Poppy Festival in Lancaster
Yes! It's April and time for the annual Poppy Festival in Lancaster. This year the festival is bringing in the Magnolia Sisters all the way from Louisiana. What a treat! The wildflowers may or may not still be bloomin', but it is still a wonderful time to make the trip up to the Antelope Valley, check out the festival and the 'Sistas, and get a dose of roamin' out in nature if you like. What a great excuse for a road trip!
Here's the festival website: Website
The website doesn't mention what time the band's playing, but there is a phone number I found somewhere. I'm sorta swamped with a new job, an IRS audit, and catching up after being out of commission for almost a month, but if I have time, I'll call and see if I can find out what time the band's playing.
If someone else finds out, let me know and I'll post it in the next Gazette!
Here's a link to the Magnolia Sisters website:
http://www.magnoliasisters.com/mag_sisters.html
Read this from "The Sisters" page of the website:
"The Magnolia Sisters is a Cajun music band comprised of four diversely talented singers and musicians. The group evolved from its founding members, Ann Savoy and Jane Vidrine, whose ten year long musical collaboration revealed the need to give a woman's voice to Cajun music while maintaining a soulful, gutsy feeling to it.
The Magnolia Sisters is the product of years of meditation, singing of the old songs, and associating with the Cajun masters. The Magnolia Sisters are friends and kindred spirits, with similar experiences and love of Cajun music.
The members of the group are Ann Savoy, Jane Vidrine, Anya Schoenegge, and Lisa Reed. Each brings to the ensemble their own rich individual experience as Louisiana musicians, parents, and women in the real world. The common ground is the music, the heritage and the feeling that comes across."
I was fortunate enough to see the Savoy Family Band a couple of weeks ago at the Getty, and Ann Savoy is a real treasure. I'm going to make sure I get out to this festival to see this band!
Again, here's the basic info:

Video Clips 'O the Week
Here's a video of Geno shot back in 1998. Note he's got a fiddle player with his band. Per the description on the YouTube page, "This was recorded at the Twist'n Shout nightclub in the basement of the VFW located in Bethesda, Maryland just outside Washington, DC - 9/6/98. The facility is closed now but during the 80's and 90's it rocked!"
Here's the link to the clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7U_B5ki_fw
Harold Guillory is the only person I know of who has had a weekly zydeco TV show on network television. He's recently uploaded a lot of clips from past shows. Here's a great one that shows some smooth moves. These clips go back a bit in time, and styling is a little different these days, but still relevant and lots of fun to watch!
If the link isn't live in this email, copy and paste it into your browser and that should do the trick! Here goes:

Southern California Festival Info
1. Gator By The Bay Festival - Mother's Day Weekend, May 9, 10, 11, 2008!
This year's Gator by the Bay has an incredible lineup, with BOTH Brian Jack and Keith Frank! For the Cajun fans, Grammy Nominees The Lost Bayou Ramblers round out the lineup. I saw these guys last month and they're going to make everyone happy with their "Cajun on Steroids"2 sound!
Also included at this festival are Blues, Swing, Country and lots more! As always, this festival pulls out all the stops for the dancers, with excellent dance instruction that starts with Cajun and Zydeco, and includes swing, salsa, country, line dances and more! Breakout sessions with the artists in intimate settings are strategically placed through the festival grounds, for the enhanced enjoyment of festival attendees.
Located across from the San Diego International Airport at Spanish Landing Park, this festival is right on the water, with views of the marina and the ability to walk along the waterfront. If great food and a wide array of arts and crafts are what you're looking for, this is definitely the place for you!
The host hotel for the festival is the San Diego Sheraton. Ask for the festival rate of $109. I notice that the festival website says the $109 Lanai rooms are sold out, but I've heard that sometimes at the last minute rooms do open up. If you're willing, make a reservation where you can, then keep checking back to see if you've been able to snag one of these in-demand rooms.
This hotel has two towers, and one is about 1/4 mile from the festival, so if you choose to stay here, ask for a room in the tower closest to the festival grounds. If you can manage it, try to book your room in the section of the hotel known as the Lanai. This section is closest to the festival, with the best access to the festival grounds. Contact the Shearaton at: (619) 692-2324
Thanks to Greg Benusa from San Diego, here are listings for other hotel options:
- LaPension Hotel a mile away in beautiful "Little Italy" neighborhood next to downtown. If you have a car I would stay here since it gives you a nice feeling of staying in the city in a great neighborhood and your very close to the festival.
http://www.lapensionehotel.com <Website>
- Motel 6 - Cheap Motel near festival... only $65.95 for a nice motel right in downtown San Diego. Safe area about two miles from the festival.
http://www.motel6.com <Website>
- Hostel - Very Cheap Lodging ... if you really want to save money just stay at the Hostel in the Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego. Great location right in the heart of the action. Take the buss or taxi to the festival only a couple miles away...

2. Simi Sunrise Festival - Memorial Weekend, May 24, 25, 2008!
This year's Simi Sunrise Cajun / Zydeco festival features the hard-driving, vibrant, authentic Zydeco of Jeffery Broussard and The Creole Cowboys, paired with Zydeco Sweetheart Rosie Ledet. Broussard is one of the few Zydeco artists today who includes fiddle in his repertoire, honoring the traditions taught him by his beloved father, the late Delson Broussard. After 18 years with Zydeco Force, Broussard started the Creole Cowboys about three years ago, with critical acclaim and much success. I highly recommend this band! Guaranteed to satisfy both the Zydeco and Cajun enthusiasts out there, Broussard and his band will make everyone very happy!
As one of the few women in the professional Zydeco circuit, Rosie Ledet packs a real punch on accordion, and gets you into the groove with her deep, sexy voice. She's tiny, but what a powerhouse! Backed by a great group of musicians, Rosie was such a hit last year that they invited her back this year by popular demand.
The lineup is rounded out with Grammy Nominee Lisa Haley and her band, as well as BJ Deculus' Bonne Musique Zydeco, the Bay Area's Mark St. Mary, and San Diego's premiere Cajun band, The San Diego Cajun Playboys.
There's a great lineup of dance instruction at this year's festival. Willie Bushnell is coming out from Houston again. This year, we're also very fortunate to have Seattle instructor Lora DeMars joining the dance instruction team. Willie and Lora have both taught on the annual Zydeco Cruise, and have extensive and very impressive resumes, which I'll write about more in future editions of the Gazette.
Rounding out the dance instruction lineup are myself, Greg Benusa, AJ Gibbs, and Sandy Baker, teaching Basic and Intermediate Zydeco, MyDeco, Cajun Jig, Waltz, Line Dances and more! While he isn't slotted to teach at this year's festival, Adrian Houser will also be joining us! Adrian is one of the hottest dancers I've ever seen and is always happy to dance with you, so be sure to look for him!
This festival is a fundraiser for the Simi Sunrise Rotary Club. All proceeds go to their selected charities. The Rotary does a lot of good for a lot of folks, so be sure to put this festival on your calendar!
For more information on this festival, check it out at: http://simicajun.org <http://simicajun.org/> /
3. Long Beach Bayou Festival - June 21, 22, 2008!
Be sure to reserve the date! More information to come!
I'm waiting for Connie Arizmendi to send me the official info, but from what I've seen, the lineup looks great this year.
