KAREN REDDING'S GATOR GAZETTE
News and Comments of Los Angeles and Orange County Area Zydeco and Cajun Events
June 24, 2008

Hi All,

I hope everyone managed to stay as cool as possible this past weekend so that you were safe and well. Last night I got a little bit carried away on YouTube looking at videos to put into this week's Gazette. There were so many good ones it was hard to limit it to just a couple, but I managed to keep it down anyway.

Here's this week's Gazette:

Weekly Thursday Night Info

This Week at the Golden Sails
Great Turnout Last Week: Last Thursday was the best turnout in a long time, and lots of fun as a
result, so come on down again this week for more!

Dance Move: Intermediate move this week will be review of the Willie Bushnell move I taught last
week, plus one other move that Willie showed us at his workshop in May, as well as at the Simi
Valley Festival.

Music: I've got a new compilation of music to play! There is some really great stuff on it, which I'm
sure everyone will enjoy.

New Dancers: Several new people came up to me after my lessons at the festival and said they
would be there this week for the lesson, so welcome to all of you! I'm looking forward to seeing
you all there. Of course, I'm looking forward to seeing all the "regulars" as well!

Clothes, clothes, more clothes! I missed a bag of clothes last week, so I'll be bringing it to class
this week to give away more great stuff! Last week, several ladies took advantage of my closet
cleaning and took home bags of goodies for FREE! Someone was thrilled that she got stuff to
wear on her vacation this week, and I got to wonder how my waist was ever really as small as it
must have been to fit into those size 4 jeans. Sheesh. Anyway, come get more stuff. It's going to
Goodwill if you don't take it.

Instead of feeding the Gator, see Karen for your name tag!

Golden Sails Ideas Welcome
As I've said before, my vision for some time for the Golden Sails has been to be able to have live
bands on a regular basis. Right now attendance is not going to support that, so I'm looking for
some way to switch things up and add some extra spice on Thursday nights.

If we could have 50 folks dancing on a regular basis, that would do the trick! It would also be even
more fun than it is now.

In the meantime, what do you folks think about having an accordion jam session on an upcoming
Thursday night?

Let me know what you think! Also, let me know if you have any other thoughts and/or ideas!

Long Beach Bayou Festival
Every year when the Bayou Festival is past, people kind of sigh and go into waiting mode for next
year's southern California festival season, and the cycle is beginning again. High points for me of
this weekend's Bayou Festival were Terrance Simien's performance on Saturday night, and
meeting Cedric Watson. I thoroughly enjoyed Chubby Carrier as well. Our local bands did a fine
job of getting things started both days. The record-breaking 100 degree heat was brutal on
Saturday, so it sure was nice that it dropped to 85 degrees on Sunday.

My hat is off to all the artists and performers on both stages who outdid themselves to entertain
us in spite of broiling in the hot sun all weekend!

Terrance Simien was at his best. I've seen him many times at other festivals and events and
man, he tore that stage apart! I've never seen him so on fire. He's so filled with joy, and such a
great performer that I knew without a doubt why he was the first performer to take the
Cajun/Zydeco Grammy earlier this year.

Many familiar faces were not seen at the festival. I hope I get to see you very soon. There are
some I know who were not there due to illness. You know who you are and you're in the thoughts
of many. We send you our love and prayers.

Many thanks to the dancers who got out of bed and to the festival at 6:30 AM on Sunday morning
to dance for the Channel 11 news to help promote the festival! That goes for the musicians, too.

Curley Taylor This Weekend!
Hot on the heels of the Long Beach Bayou Festival, Curley Taylor is making a rare trip out to the
west coast and will be in southern California this weekend. Here are the details:

Curley Taylor and Zydeco Trouble
Cafe Boogaloo
Hermosa Beach, CA
Saturday, June 28
9:30 PM - ?
$10
Killer food!
Plenty of on street parking and lot across street behind Starbucks

Cafe Boogaloo
1238 Hermosa Avenue
Hermosa Beach CA 90254
(310) 318-2324
www.cafeboogaloo.com

NOTE: I recommend arriving as early as possible for this event in order to get a table close to the
stage. While there's really no formal dance floor, there is a SMALL area in front of the band
where folks can dance. The food's really good, so I'll be eating there. Other than that, where else
on the west coast can you see a Zydeco super star like Curley Taylor for only $10?

I'm parking in the parking structure across the street. Very safe, well lighted and easier to park
than street parking. There is a fee, but well worth it.

Curley Taylor and Zydeco Trouble
War Memorial Building (VENUE CHANGED!)
Balboa Park
San Diego, CA
Sunday, June 29th
6- 9 PM
$14 Cover
www.icajunzydeco.com

If you're near San Diego or want to carpool, this will be well worth the trip. As I said, Curley rarely
gets out here. The War Memorial Building is next to the San Diego Zoo. Check the website above
for more info.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS:
Golden Sails Dark - Field Trip to Culver City Thursday Night, July 24!
I wanted to let you guys all know in advance that the Golden Sails will be dark on Thursday night,
July 24 for the annual ZYDECO FIELD TRIP TO CULVER CITY!

If you know of someone who doesn't check their email, please call them up and tell them we're
not going to be at the Golden Sails that night, 'cuz we'll be in Culver City to see Leroy Thomas.

We can carpool up there to help defray the high cost of gasoline and to help beat the traffic. More
details later. Just mark your calendars for the field trip, OK?

Here is a little info about this event:

ORANGE COUNTY FAIR ZYDECO DANCE DEMO
Saturday, July 26, 2008!
GET FREE ADMISSION TO THE FAIR!
Next up for me for this year is the Orange County Zydeco Dance Demo. I've got a handful of folks
who've told me they're planning on being there. Still need at least 20 more. Please get back to me
asap! I need to let the folks at the fair know how many passes I'm going to need.

You get free admission to the fair, plus free parking! Last year there were 46 of us, and everyone
had a great time. Let's do it again this year! Help grow awareness of Zydeco!

This year we're back on the Plaza Arts Stage, which is the largest stage at the fair. Our time slot
is 12:00 Noon, so we should have a much better number of folks in the audience than last year.

More about the special attractions at this year's fair in the next Gazette.

Here's the scoop on the demo:

Greg B's Camping Trip August 1-3, 2008
Greg Benusa's doing another camping trip again this year and he's back to Mt. Laguna! Thank
you Greg! I try to go on this trip every year and already sent him my rsvp. It's the same weekend
as the Long Beach Crawfish festival, but I'd rather be camping that weekend. Here's the info from
the Bons Temps website,

"We have the Buckwheat site reserved which is a little bigger and next to the site we had stayed
at in the past. We will need at least 10 folks committed by July 1st for us to do the trip. $20 total
per person for both Friday and Saturday should work fine to cover the costs of the site. I will need
to know by July 1st if your committed to going so we can plan accordingly. Tent camping,
Showers available in camp ground. Will do a hike on Saturday for those who want to go. Camp
fires, lots of relaxing, eating, talking, joking, etc....
http://www.lagunamountain.com/photos.htm."

Greg always does an outstanding job of making sure there are lots of interesting and fun activities
to do on his camping weekends. It's a great campground high in the mountains near Julian. At
night you can fall asleep looking up at the Milky Way, while listening to breezes as they rustle the
branches of the pines overhead.

There were a couple of years that Greg actually brought a digital projector and we watched
movies, one year we danced at the local restaurant, there are always folks who bring instruments
and we sing old songs, eat s'mores, and just have a great time!

Check with Greg if you are interested in joining them at gbenusa@pacbell.net.

Boudreau Jokes are back!
I sat next to Robert H from New Orleans this past weekend. He's been a contributor of Boudreau
jokes in the Gazette in the past and mentioned that he'd noticed the absence of those jokes
lately. Well, Robert, here's one you sent me a while back. I couldn't find one I liked better, so I'm
running it again. Send more!

The Clothes Sale
Bourdreaux and Thibodaux go to Texas to visit a cousin who is in the penitintiary. While they are
walking down the street they see a sign that says, shirts $1.50, pants $2.50, and suits $5.00.

Boudreaux says I got a good idea Thibodaux, lets buy a bunch a dem clothes, go back home
and sell them, and the money we make will pay for dis trip. Thibodaux says, I don't tink das a
good idea, dem people gonna know we from La. and they might try to rip us off. Boudreaux says,
leave every ting to me, I will just talk with a Texas accent. Now when we go in dere, let me do the
talkin.

So they walk in the place and Boudreaux says in his best Texas accent, "well howdy partner, we
saw the sign outside and we wanna git a dozen of them there shirts, pants, and suits you folks
have on sale. The man behind the counter smiles and says, you guys have got to be from
Louisiana.

Boudreaux is stunned, so he immediately drops the fake accent and asks, how did you know dat?
The man replies, because we don't sell clothes here, this is a dry cleaner.

Video Clips of the Week
As I said, I got carried away looking at clips for this section of the newsletter. This week I thought
I'd send out some Cajun clips in addition to Zydeco. One of the clips I liked was of Lee Benoit and
his band. I wrote him asking for info and here's what he said:

"Hey Karen,

Thanks for writing. Feel free to include any of our youtube videos in your email newsletter. The
video that you linked to was recorded at Randol's restaurant in Lafayette Louisiana on January
28th, 2007. It was originally recorded for a local television show called Allons Danser. The
musicians are Lee Benoit-accordion, Valerie Benoit-bass guitar, Maegen Benoit-Drums, Mark
Hebert-fiddle and Lorraine Gros-petit fer. You can find more info at our website
at www.leebenoit.com <http://www.leebenoit.com/> or www.myspace.com/leebenoit
<http://www.myspace.com/leebenoit>

I am glad that you enjoy our music.

Take care and God bless,

Lee Benoit"

Here's the link to the clip. I hope you like it too.

Lee Benoit, Lacassine
Special: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAVNUqM0iv0&feature=related

While cruisin' around on YouTube, I found it very interesting that there were lots of folks who put
up instructional accordion clips of Cajun versions of songs. LOTS of 'em! I looked to see if any of
the Zydeco artists had done the same, but couldn't find any. If one of you folks know of some,
send them my way. It will be fun to see them.

In the meantime, here's something I found of Dennis Gurwell who's the accordion player for LA's
Bonne Musique Zydeco band. Dennis is playing his Roland digital accordion. Very interesting
instrument. Hi, Dennis! Anyway, here's the clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G-na1E1CFkU

I stumbled on this classic footage of John Delafose with a young Geno on drums. The best view
of Geno is at the very end, but you can catch glimpses of him throughout. Here's the clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yz2qV9qk_XI&feature=related

Finally, here's a strange but interesting clip of young zydeco dancers at a recent trail ride
somewhere in Louisiana. What's interesting is their styling. What's strange is that the camera
operator kept turning the camera sideways. Keep your head up and you'll be OK. Here goes:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cvDXxLf7cIg&feature=related

I've got a bunch more for next week, too, including one of dancers feet at Gator by the Bay. I
recognized some of those feet, too! Stay tuned.

Zydeco Dance Instruction Available!
If you or anyone else you know is interested in learning to dance the Zydeco, I teach at corporate
events, private parties, and also give personalized private lessons, focusing in on the individual
needs of each student. I teach much more than just the moves, assisting my students in learning
how to identify which muscles are used to make each move and work on honing styling, building
strength and increasing flexibility. I will travel to spread the Gospel of Zydeco! Please contact me
