Seems there was a lot going on. Sorry there's no video clip or Cajun joke this week. Hopefully, I'll be back with that stuff next time. in the meantime, Here's this week's Gazette: GOLDEN SAILS DARK THIS WEEK! Field Trip to Culver City for Leroy Thomas! GOLDEN SAILS DARK THIS WEEK! This is a time-honored tradition. Arrive early, bring a picnic dinner or just eat at one of the great small establishments that line Culver Blvd. Bring your folding chair, some water, and be prepared to have a great time! PLAN ON ARRIVING EARLY. The folks in Culver City get there very early to put out their chairs. Parking is conveniently located under the City Hall. The concert is free, but there is a small charge for the underground parking. (There is also street parking and some other lots in the area, but the City Hall parking is most convenient.) NOTE: For those who wish to carpool, meet at the parking lot in front of the PCH Club. We'll be leaving at 4:30 PM SHARP! Please contact me in advance if you want to carpool, so I know who's coming with us. If there are only a few people, I'd prefer to meet at my house, so email or give me a call ASAP. July 24, Thursday Leroy in Torrance this Wednesday July 23, Wednesday This Saturday July 26 12:00 NOON: If you weren't able to come dance with us, come on out and cheer us on, tell your friends, and help spread the gospel of Zydeco! Here are the details: T-Lou at Gardena City Hall Sat July 26 7-9 PM! This was a very nice event last year. There's plenty of room to dance on the wide sidewalk in front of the band, bring a picnic dinner and enjoy the evening. I've had a request to see if someone would be willing to gather the names and contact information of "new" people at this event, as there's a chance I won't make it due to exhaustion from the OC Fair earlier in the day. If you'd be willing to help with this, please contact me pronto, so I can get you the PDF file of the form. In the meantime, here's the scoop: July 26, Saturday Live Radio Broadcast of Jeffery Broussard this Saturday Night Lisa Haley in Laguna Beach, Sunday, July 27 Greg B's Camping Trip August 1-3, 2008 "We have the Buckwheat site reserved which is a little bigger and next to the site we had stayed at in the past. We will need at least 10 folks committed by July 1st for us to do the trip. $20 total per person for both Friday and Saturday should work fine to cover the costs of the site. I will need to know by July 1st if your committed to going so we can plan accordingly. Tent camping, Showers available in camp ground. Will do a hike on Saturday for those who want to go. Camp fires, lots of relaxing, eating, talking, joking, etc.... Greg always does an outstanding job of making sure there are lots of interesting and fun activities to do on his camping weekends. It's a great campground high in the mountains near Julian. At night you can fall asleep looking up at the Milky Way, while listening to breezes as they rustle the branches of the pines overhead. There were a couple of years that Greg actually brought a digital projector and we watched movies, one year we danced at the local restaurant, there are always folks who bring instruments and we sing old songs, eat s'mores, and just have a great time! Check with Greg if you are interested in joining them at gbenusa@pacbell.net. Zydeco at the Los Angeles Music Center Friday, August 8, 2008! By the way, if you want to show your support for this event and you're going to be near the Music Center, I will be teaching a "Teaser" lesson this Friday night, July 25 during the break at their Salsa dance that evening. Come on out to the Los Angeles Music Center's FREE Dance Downtown Zydeco dance evening on Friday night, August 8! Help grow attendance in our Zydeco dance community. Here's the link to the website: August 8, Friday Pine Leaf Boys at Caltech! Oct 18 Mark your calendars! From the Caltech website here is a description of the performers: PLB: "The Pine Leaf Boys bring youthful exuberance to their inimitable brand of traditional Cajun and Creole music. They bring a variety and energy to standards, as well as songs by past masters, all delivered with gusto. Skillful multi-instrumentalists, they often switch instruments during their effervescent show." Rani Arbo: "A sparkling, high energy show marked by breathtaking musicianship." Singer Rani Arbo and her group serve up a foot-stomping musical celebration of American roots fused with splashes of pop and jazz. Rich four-part harmonies, drum, fiddle, guitar, and bass create a jubilant mix of traditional, original, and contemporary sounds. Info on the event: http://events.caltech.edu/events/event-5462.html In short, here are the details: October 18, 2008, Saturday Past Event: Bill Pickett Rodeo Housed in the impressively refurbished "The Grand" equestrian center in Industry Hills, this was a memorable event. Cowboys and Cowgirls of all ages participated. The youngest was a tiny six-year-old barrell racer at his first rodeo. Cowboys were bucked off broncs, thrown from spinning bulls as they charged around the arena, and dazzled the audience as they passed the baton in the relay races. Their horses ran full out, mane and tails flying, nostrils distended, with hooves sending clods of earth flying from the arena floor. Cowgirls leaned precariously from their galloping mounts to snatch ribbons from steers in the incongruously named Steer Decorating event, steers were roped, calves thrown to the ground and legs tied in fractions of seconds, Stevie Wonder wowed the crowd as he said hello to folks during intermission, and a great time was had by all. If you've never been to this event, plan on going next year when the Bill Pickett Rodeo is back in town. MINDY' SONEN'S FESTIVAL REPORT (ALAMEDA AND PORTLAND, OR) "If you don't treat your dog right, I'll always have a place where he can bury his bone" -Rosie Ledet As a master of the double entrendre, with a sultry voice, a real short mini-skirt, and a tight backup band, is it any wonder Rosie Ledet is one heck of a crowd pleaser? She accomplished 3 things I have never seen a zydeco performer do, and it reminded me of several of the better rock and roll concerts I have attended in my lifetime. She managed to: The Cascade Zydeco Club in Portland does an great job of organizing this event. Every year they hire 4 zydeco bands, and each of the 4 bands plays twice throughout the day and evening. The event goes until 10:30pm. That way, if you miss a band during the day, you can catch their evening show. What a wonderful idea! The other bands that day were Chris Ardoin, Dikki Du and Cedryl Ballou. Those other three were good, but after Rosie's performance, they weren't memorable. Many dancers just stopped to stare. Talk about stage presence-wow. I saw her about 5 years ago at the Memphis Zydeco Festival, and she was smokin' hot this time in comparison. Her backup band, for some unknown reason was 'Lil Malcom and the House Rockers. (They mumbled something about her regular backup band being unavailable this summer). Note to Rosie-Keep these guys around-they knocked the doors off the place. O.k.-there are no doors at an outdoor festival, but you get the point. Sue even had extra pirate costumes on hand for anyone who didn?t have one. She even installed a dance floor on the float. It was a very long parade, a full two hours. If you ever feel a need to test your balance and stamina, this is the event to attend! Try dancing for two hours on a moving vehicle and YOU try to keep your balance! Just to make us feel even more humble-and dork-like, she had Willie Bushnell there to dance with us. With his 120-pound weight loss, Willie was unrecognizable. Kudos to you Willie. And a special kudos to Sue for her hard work. It certainly paid off as our float won first place!!!! She had another dance and BBQ planned for later that afternoon but we skipped it to watch fireworks from a boat in San Francisco Bay. If you've never seen San Francisco Fog colored by fireworks, its an experience! I knew I'd be dancing to Chris Ardoin the very next day in Portland, so it was a good choice we made. The new venue Sue has for dancing is a brand-new beautiful dance studio with 3 dance floors. It is a great location at the entrance to Alameda Island. I wish her much success in the new venue. See you at Ardenwood!" Thanks, Mindy! Great report! SHERRI GRAMZA'S INCREDIBLE LEMON DESSERT! Lemon Lush FLOYD'S RECORDS SPOTLIGHT CD OF THE WEEK There are some wonderful tunes that are old-time country and some that are pure, old time Cajun. TIRE WARNING - CRITICAL INFORMATION MAY SAVE YOUR LIFE Someone sent me this link this week to a news story that could save your life. Did you know that some of the tires that are being sold as "new" could be as much as 12 years old? These tires become brittle and go to shreds at highway speeds, causing the vehicle to veer out of control. Take the time to watch this clip, it could save your life or the life of someone you love. http://abcnews.go.com/Video/playerIndex?id=4826897 I hope this helps someone. Four music stages are featured with large dance floors at both the Main Stage and Dance Pavilion. Dance lessons in the afternoon are followed by packed evening dances to live Louisiana dance bands. The Family Stage provides storytelling at its best along with nationally known children's performers, mardi gras mask making workshops, and evening movies plus the ever increasing Kids Cajun Academy instrument learning program. The Workshop Stage has intimate music demonstrations and interaction with artists. A new feature at this year's Workshop Stage is COOKING WITH LINDZAY. Patrons will learn to cook authentic "Loooziane style" cuisine with none other than Lindzay Young from the Red Stick Ramblers< /b>. Lindzay has been cooking up a storm since he was a kid and is excited about passing on some of his culinary secrets to fellow food enthusiasts. Critics have been quoted as saying that, "Rhythm & Roots is an incredible experience, a perfectly organized, flawlessly run major destination event that music fans from all over the country will be drawn to…" So, if you're looking to "let the good times roll," the Rhythm & Roots Festival in Charlestown, RI is the place on Labor Day weekend. 14th Annual Cascade Zydeco Dance Camp Enjoy a whole weekend of Brian Jack and the Zydeco Gamblers and professional dance instruction by Michael Seider and Flory Katz in the beautiful Mt Hood National Forest, only 55 miles east of Portland.
