There are many of you in the Inland Empire who've been wanting zydeco in your area. Spread the word to everyone you know out there to come out and support this band. Having taught himself to play accordion at age 15, Mark toured with Clifton Chenier, Queen Ida, Doug Kershaw and many others from New Orleans to Houston and up and down the west coast. He's well-grounded in traditional Zydeco, so if that's what you're looking for, he's your man. Below is a link to Mark's website as well as information about this event.
For those of us in Los Angeles, we get an additional chance to dance to Mark on Sunday, October 12. Check it out!

Saturday, Oct. 18 at Caltech in Pasadena
Grammy nominated Pine Leaf Boys are going to be in southern California again. Mark your calendars! If you love the Pine Leaf Boys, there are two opportunities to see them this weekend.
If you're new to the Gator Gazette, or new to zydeco, make it a point to go see this band. There's a reason they were nominated for a Grammy!
Regarding the Caltech performance, I've been told that most likely, Rani Arbo will be opening, but I don't have confirmation, so call the venue if this is important to you. Phone number provided below.
From the Caltech website here is a description of the performers:
PLB: "The Pine Leaf Boys bring youthful exuberance to their inimitable brand of traditional Cajun and Creole music. They bring a variety and energy to standards, as well as songs by past masters, all delivered with gusto. Skillful multi-instrumentalists, they often switch instruments during their effervescent show."
Rani Arbo: "A sparkling, high energy show marked by breathtaking musicianship." Singer Rani Arbo and her group serve up a foot-stomping musical celebration of American roots fused with splashes of pop and jazz. Rich four-part harmonies, drum, fiddle, guitar, and bass create a jubilant mix of traditional, original, and contemporary sounds.

Zydeco Comes to Catalina October 25!
Catalina is having it's first ever Roots Festival on Saturday, October 25! If you've been longing for a quick getaway, this may be just the ticket. Catalina is approximately an hour-and-a-half away by one of the local ferry services. Once you arrive on the island, it's like being in another country. Stress just seems to melt away. This tiny island, made famous by the Wrigley family and the old song "26 Miles Across the Sea" seems to magically melt stress away.
Music lineup includes Bluegrass, Reggae, Irish, Italian, Russian, Afro-Latin funk and Brazilian Rock Reggae, with Bennie and the Swamp Gators bringing zydeco to the island. This band has come a long way in the past couple of years, and is sounding pretty good these days. Check them out on Catalina. Here are the detals:

UPDATE: Bons Temps Halloween Bash, Sat. Nov. 1, 2008
San Diego has an annual Halloween masquerade party and it's always a lot of tun! If you're going to be in the San Diego area on November 1, put on your Halloween best and join in! Be sure to read all the great ideas for costumes below.
Here's the scoop from Garry Todd:
On Saturday November 1st, The Gator Theater starring the Bon Temps Social Club Not Ready for Prime Time Players will Present "The Marie Laveau Voodoo Queen of New Orleans and All Saints Day Celebration Halloween Ball." Lets all bring our Mojo together for a great Halloween and All Saint's Day Celebration and roll it into a fun Saints and Spirits Costume Ball!
Some costume Ideas would be: to come as your Favorite Saint or create your own Saint by choosing your favorite Celebrity (preferably one that has passed on to the other side) along with your own "Patron Saint of _________" such as Saint Chenier, Saint Jocque, Saint Boozoo, Saint Zydeco Joseph, OR Saint Elvis Our Patron Saint of Pelvis, Saint Liberace Our Patron Saint of Campy, Saint "Hey Mon" Marley Our Patron Saint of One Love, etc.; even make your own Saint cards to pass
out.Let your mojo come forth.
Other costume themes could be: Pirate Jean Lafitte and Krewe from the Louisiana Bayou, or a Voodoo doll, or The Blue Dog which was inspired by the Cajun Werewolf "loup-garou" or Sheriff Harry Lee the famous Louisiana lawman or Huey "The Kingfish" P. Long (P for politics) or the grounds keeper from The Cities of the Dead (which includes NOLA infamous St. Louis Cemeteries where both Marie Laveau's crypts are located) or a pallbearer (with six it will be a raising time), or the driver of a horse carriage Hearse OR the biggest Villain of them all "the CEO of your favorite bankrupt company" or finally come as the Honour Soiree... the Queen herself Marie Laveau. Note, there were actually two Maire Laveaus, the mother and her mischievous daughter both of the same name (below are links to her poster and history). Whatever your costumes will be, it will work!
PLEASE NOTE: COSTUMES ARE RECOMMENDED - NOT REQUIRED!!
During the band break, The Bon Temps Social Club Not Ready for Prime Time Players with be performing a short seance show followed by a NOLA Jazz Funeral Procession with our very own Pierre Pierre as the funeral director. This is a "can't be missed" performance! There will a Photo
backdrop with a All Saint's Day altar for individual photos and a group photo right after the procession. Also Queen Laveau (also known as Liz D.) will be doing fortune telling in lobby during the dance. If you would like to help out with decorations or/and set up, it would be greatly appreciated! Please contact Saint Fess, "Our Patron Saint of Piano Professor" (AKA Professor "Fess" Longhair) at garrytodd@gmail.com. It is going to be a great time!

Video Clip of the Week: Classic Clifton
Before I give you this week's video clip, I wanted to let you know I heard back from Frank Bohan of the Zydeco Flames regarding the Flames video from last week. Here's what Frank had to say:
"The club was a place in Richmond, CA. circa 1999, called Bobby's Backdoor BBQ. which no longer exists in that location. They use to have weekly zydeco dances and it was quite a funky little place.
The band is still together, although with a different accordion player. I will give you some links and you are welcome to get all the data that you want. Thanks for your interest in the band. Keep your eyes out for more videos; I will be posting more in the next few weeks."
More links for the Zydeco Flames:
www.zydecoflames.com
www.cdbaby.com/zydecoflames
www.myspace.com/zydecoflamesmusic
www.sonicbids.com/zydecoflames
I also heard back about the clip of Ruben at Shakespeare's Pub. Here's the reply:
Re: Ruben at Shakespeare's Pub
"Hi, Karen ... thanks for your interest. Ruben (aka Creole Soul) is currently on the road playing rub-board with Leroy Thomas and the Zydeco Roadrunners. Leroy is kind enough to let Ruben take center stage and play some of his own songs and/or zydeco classics at some of the shows.
Ruben is a Houston native and the video was captured at Shakespeare's Pub in Houston. He has been around zydeco his entire life and started playing as a young child. In addition, he is a very talented songwriter and his musical style incorporates multiple influences.
He has toured with Leroy and also CJ Chenier in the last year - he counts playing with CJ at New Orleans Jazz Fest this year as a major highlight.
He has plans to relocate to Northern California later this year.
Charlotte"
How cool is that? Leroy's going to be back in southern California in December, so we'll all get to meet Ruben at that time. This should be a lot of fun!
Finally, I heard from Henk Mutsaers, who lives in the Netherlands. Henk has posted a video of his radio station where he has a regular zydeco music show. Henk helped get the annual zydeco festival in the Netherlands going and is quite an interesting guy. Because I had difficulty getting the clip to play, I didn't include it in last week's Gazette, but Henk says it works just fine on all his computers, so here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kcx2VsXoJAc
Here's what Henk had to say:
"Hi my name is Henk Mutsaers, living in the south part of the Netherlands near the Belgium border. I am working in the weekends as a deejay starting out way back in 1970 in several discotheques until 1999. I also started my own mobile road show and do some singing. Over the last 20 years I did a lot of live presentations at concerts and you feel it coming. I came in contact with Zydeco music. The River Zydeco Band started to play that kind of, at the time unknown music, … so I thought. But they told me that Clifton Chenier’s hit “Keep on knocking but you can’t come in” was the same kind of music. Two years later they asked me to do the presentation of their festival and I was sold. I recorded a few Zydeco songs myself (I’ve got a money tree in my garden – Free download check Google) and recently Here’s to your health. (You Tube) The festival grew over the years and we can welcome 6.000 visitors from all around the world each year making it so popular that the town of Raamsdonksveer is called Zydeco Zity for the second weekend in June.
A couple of week’s age Jo van Strien (River Zydeco Band) called me, asking if I want to get involved with ZydecoZity Radio so I did. We make a weekly show at our local station that we broadcast at 5 PM local time on Sunday and now available trough the Internet at www.zydecozityradio.tk <http://www.zydecozityradio.tk> We hope to start a replay service a.s.a.p and the future might be a full 24 hour station. Who knows? For the time being it can be interesting to listen to the show because of the European bands were playing. The show is presented in Dutch, but if the stats tell me more and more people from all over the word tune in we can switch to English – Henk Mutsaers"
So hey, folks, tune into Dutch Zydeco radio online at www.zydecozityradio.tk <http://www.zydecozityradio.tk>
OK, here's this week's video clip. It's classic Clifton Chenier and it's a blast! Enjoy!
